Prof. Pellizzari attracted the attention of the EPPO Secretariat
to
recent findings of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera:
Curculionidae – EPPO Alert List) on Phoenix canariensis in 3 regions
of Italy: Campania, Toscana and Sicilia. In Campania, R. ferrugineus
was reported on P. canariensis in the volcanic area (zona Fleglea). In
Toscana, the presence of R. ferrugineus was first noticed on P.
canariensis in October 2004 in a nursery near Pistoia. No further
details could be found for Sicilia.
The situation of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus in Italy can be described
as follows: Present, few outbreaks found on Phoenix canariensis in
Campania, Toscana, and Sicilia.
